About Me

I'm the author of The Hour Between Dog and Wolf, and of Small Gods of Grief which was awarded the Isabella Gardner Prize for Poetry in 2001. My third poetry collection, A New Hunger, was selected as an ALA Notable Book in 2008, and my next book will be published by Four Way Books in January of 2019.

I'm the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and my work has been widely anthologized. Garrison Keillor read four of my poems on N.P.R's The Writer's Almanach. I edited four anthologies: Night Out: Poems about Hotels, Motels, Restaurants and Bars, Outsiders: Poems about Rebels, Exiles and Renegades, Urban Nature: Poems about Wildlife in the Cities, and Never Before: Poems About First Experiences.

I have led poetry workshops at many Writers' Conferences, such as The Frost Place, the Aspen Writers' Conference, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, and the Palm Beach Poetry Festival in Florida. I was awarded a Fellowship at the Breadloaf Writers' Conference, and was a Writer in Residence at The Vermont Studio Center as well as at Hamilton College, New York. I was also offered the McEver Chair for Visiting Writers at Georgia Tech University in Atlanta, Georgia. I taught poetry at Emerson College in Boston and at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and am a member of the founding faculty at the Low Residency MFA Program at Pine Manor College, and offer private mentoring and poetry editing services.
